Mining equipment and infrastructure we move

Westlink is a global leader in providing logistics for rail operations with over 300 locomotives and 9,000 wagons delivered successfully over the course of 30 years. This expertise extends further to delivery of infrastructure and equipment that builds the networks that help a growing population move.

From urban commuter services to long distance heavy haul rail lines for the transportation of natural resources and freight, Westlink has vast experience and specific logistics management solutions for the delivery of rolling stock, track machinery and rail infrastructure. Westlink has delivered rolling stock including locomotives, wagons, rail equipment and infrastructure for the heaviest haul rail operations in the world that operate in some of the harshest and most remote regions. This track record in rail demonstrates that whether it for networks in congested urban areas or long distance railways in remote areas, our team of logistics professionals can deliver your rail equipment safely, on time and within budget.

As populations grow, so do demands for safe, rapid and cost-effective transportation. We work our customers in transportation to help build, modernise and expand transportation projects and operations that carry passengers and freight to service industries, commerce and communities.

Our rail and transportation customers include mining and freight rail operators, passenger network operators, rolling stock manufacturers, rail construction/maintenance companies, construction contractors and infrastructure owners. Westlink transports rolling stock, track machinery, rail infrastructure, bridge sections, construction equipment, structural steel and other assets for new transport networks, capacity upgrades and maintenance.

Rail operations need to be continuous with minimal disruptions to avoid impact to freight movements or production. As rail networks and operations expand, the delivery of new rolling stock is required, and it is critical to expedite commissioning of these new assets without interruption to existing operations.

Westlink has vast experience with delivering rolling stock onto our customers tracks and providing supporting services to get assets into service quicker. Our operations team are trained in rail operations and can manage network isolations, track readiness preparations, mobilisations of equipment and labour, delivery of rolling stock and commissioning services.

Rail networks for freight, commodities and resources are requiring increased payloads to meet supply chain, production and customer requirements. Hence, larger and more powerful heavy haul locomotives are being developed and built and are generally heavier and larger units. This specifications are even more so for new battery electric units.

These heavy haul locomotives need specialist engineered heavy lift and transport solutions to move them from factory, workshop or rail yard. Westlink has been transporting heavy haul locomotives across the globe for more than twenty years and has moved 400 units globally.

Operation and construction of rail networks does not always require brand new rolling stock or machinery. Often there can be no wait for new rolling stock lead times nor is the budget available or the machinery required is so specialist and only needed for project and maintenance tasks. In these instances, used and existing rolling stock and machinery can be used to meet the project, operation or maintenance needs.

Often this used equipment requires significant restoration and/or cleaning to permit the importation into another state or country. This remedial work could also be required to operate effectively in the equipment’s new operational role. Westlink has handled the restoration, cleaning and transport of hundreds of used locomotives, wagons and track machinery and has an exemplary record of satisfying local customs and quarantine requirements at import.

Build programs for new rolling stock or refurbishment programs for existing machines can have extensive lead times until readiness for delivery and operation. It is imperative that rolling stock is inspected throughout its build program to track progress, quality, defect and identify quarantine issues so that they can resolved prior to shipment to delivery point.

Westlink supervisors are experienced in rolling stock inspections to ensure the aforementioned issues are rectified in advance of any transportation being organised or delivery to rail yard to avoid delays and after factory rectification. Our rail team have developed comprehensive procedures, checklists and data libraries on rolling stock inspections at factory, port and once delivered to rail yard for operation.

As rolling stock reaches its end of life, it is important to relocate the equipment for sale, refurbishment or decommissioning. Each purpose requires different methodologies to safely remove from existing rail yards or operations and move to new locations for a second life or responsible scrapping.

Westlink has been involved with several decommissioning, refurbishment and resale programs with its rail operations and rolling stock manufacturer customers. Whether it be onsite lifting equipment and transport to remove old rolling stock or scrapping programs at an offsite location, we have the know how and transport assets at our disposal to assist with the removal end of life rolling stock.

Smarter construction methods are being adopted in mobility, rail and road infrastructure to reduce cost and schedule of such infrastructure projects. Methods such as precast and modularised sections are examples of such methods used for efficiency gains in construction.

Such construction methods require bespoke logistics solution, sometimes with heavy transport and lift applications. Westlink has a dedicated engineering and project management team to assist with these infrastructure construction projects and can offer expertise from design to construction phase.
