Westlink provides bespoke logistics solutions for our mining Customers because each project and operation is unique.
Logistics planning and execution in mining is critical to reduce overall CAPEX and OPEX costs and in achieving project, operations and production objectives.
Westlink is proud to serve the junior, mid-tier and major mining operators and the contractors and equipment suppliers who serve them. Our involvement in mining includes logistics both greenfield and brownfield developments and supporting existing operations across a range of sectors including Iron Ore and Steel, Battery , Critical and Energy Transition Materials, Precious Metals, Industrial Metals and Other Commodities.
From Pit to Port, Westlink provides bespoke logistics solutions for our mining Customers as each project and operation is unique. Our services provide seamless transportation solutions for equipment, fabrications and assets for Material Handling and Processing, Heavy Mobile and Underground Equipment, Rail, Port and Marine Infrastructure and Non-Processing Infrastructure (NPI).

Our turnkey mining logistics solutions

Maximising transport envelopes for road, sea and air to maximise modularisation and preassembly to reduce onsite construction and commissioning costs and schedule. Such modular strategies for mining construction can also offer reduced onsite activity risk and controlled fabrication/construction environments or be driven by remote project site locations, aggressive project targets, site plot plan and laydown restrictions and local fabrication limitations.
Oversize and heavy modules require specialist logistics solutions which Westlink can define from early concept through to execution phases in a project. These solutions can involve heavy lifting and transport, customised lifting arrangements and methodologies, traffic management for oversized loads, grillage design, sequence deliveries and many other considerations which require detailed engineering, planning and coordination.

Rail operations can be critical for some mine asset production and delivering their commodities to market. Downtime in rail operations can have a significant effect on production targets and revenue. This demand and reliance requires the delivery of rolling stock and rail infrastructure to be on time and with minimal disruption to continuous rail operations.”
Westlink has provided bespoke logistics for mining rolling stock for over 20 years – from factory to rail yard. Over this time, we have developed specialised solutions for locomotives, wagons, track machines and rail infrastructure that include complementary on-track services such as assembly and commissioning. We have provided these services for some of the biggest global mining operators.

End of mine life, asset ownership change, and commodity cycles can drive the relocation of existing mining plant to alternative locations for reallocation of capital and to fast track bringing production online for new projects. The disassembly strategy of an existing processing plant and supporting infrastructure, transportation of this equipment to its new operating location and reconstruction to bring a new mining project online require careful logistics planning.
Our expertise in mine processing plant and supporting infrastructure relocations begins at the planning phase, assessing the degree of deconstruction required to satisfy permissible transport envelopes to cleaning and preparation programs to transportation to site for construction and commissioning. We have provided these logistics support services for process equipment, material handling equipment, rail, port, NPI and others.

As resource deposits become more remote and with less access to utilities, project teams are challenged with the construction and commissioning of power and energy infrastructure to run these remote mining operations. There is also a drive from the mining industry to move from fossil fuel to more sustainable power sources as part of the energy transition which also requires the delivery of new energy infrastructure to replace older equipment.
Such power generation equipment can be oversized, heavy and sensitive and requires unique transportation methods to deliver to site for installation and energisation. Our experience in power generation and storage equipment spans over 30 years from generators, turbines, transformers, switchrooms and sustainable energy equipment like solar panels, wind farms and others.

The purchase or relocation of used mining machinery can provide significant cost savings compared to new equipment procurement. There also can be opportunity to vastly reduce lead times of commissioning used machines into service when compared to new builds. However, there are challenges associated with the reallocation of used machines including remote mine site collection, condition inspections, potential disassembly/assembly, extensive cleaning and others.
Such challenges require expert logistics planning such as the ‘engineered logistics’ approach offered by Westlink. Our services for used mining machinery cater for heavy mobile equipment, rolling stock, underground equipment, drill and blast machinery and others. Our quarantine management services provide extensive cleaning and shipment preparation programs which ensure seamless import and export of used machinery, no matter the original condition.

Marine, port and wharf infrastructure can be critical to import and export for mining operations. All marine infrastructure for mining has unique design, construction and maintenance elements to suit the operation it supports and the metocean environment it operates in. Some marine infrastructure can be connected directly to production for export of commodities and therefore disruption to these assets needs to be eliminated or minimised during construction, maintenance or upgrades.
Westlink can provide custom logistics solutions for marine infrastructure whether it be piles, headstocks, precast sections, dolphins, walkways, seawall blocks and others. This infrastructure can be delivered direct to the installation point, or we can also arrange direct installation from transport assets to expedite construction and reduce cost.
