Westlink was engaged to provide a multimodal logistics solution for four (4) product bins and structural steel fabricated in Qingdao, China to be used in the construction of an iron ore screenhouse at Rio Tinto’s Cape Lambert operations in the Pilbara region of Australia.

Scope

  • Tug and barge – fabrication yard to vessel hook at port of Qingdao, China 

  • Multipurpose Vessel (MPP) – Qingdao to Port Walcott 

  • Heavy Lift Vessel (HLV) – Qingdao to Port Walcott Tug and Barge – Port Walcott to Cape Lambert barge landing facility 

  • Heavy Haulage – barge landing to screenhouse project site at Rio Tinto Cape Lambert operations

Highlights

  • Zero LTIs 

  • 3,500 cubic metres (cbm) transported with heaviest lift 225 metric ton (mt) 

  • Two consecutive shipments – one (1) MPP and one (1) HLV 

  • HLV and tug and barge set interfacing 

  • Zero tides missed for barge operations 

  • Additional earthworks coordinated to accommodate barge landing and heavy haulage at Cape Lambert 

  • Two kilometres to site via heavy haulage roll-off from barge with zero disruption to mining operations 

  • Direct install from heavy haulage delivery point
